Tribal Migration in India

FORESIGHT ANALYSIS OF MADHYA PRADESH & RAJASTHAN BY 2020

What are the push and pull factors making marginalised tribal communities migrate on a seasonal basis in India? What are the nutritional impacts of these movements on children and women?

This report has been commissioned by the Action Against Hunger country office in India and its partner organisation, the Fight Hunger Foundation (FHF), on the basis of field observations in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. In these two states, peaks of child malnutrition are regularly monitored when tribal communities return from seasonal migrations. This questions the potential relationship between the two phenomena. In order to support operational programming, advocacy and strategic decision making, and knowing that the migratory cycle is a traditional pattern of the area, the analysis focuses on short-term, intra- and inter-state population movements that are essentially driven by the access to seasonal job opportunities.
